RIAA: Those CD rips of yours are still "unauthorized"
Isn’t this a delicate balance? Certainly on a legal/technical point the RIAA is correct — ripping a CD is illegal. But since some of us used to make tapes of LPs to play in the car, we all have been doing this. There has always been an “understanding” that such copies, which can now be sideloaded onto digital devices, were legal and accepted by the industry.
Yet if they say that, does that put at risk their legal position? Is this one place where the law puts them in a lose/lose position? One way they seem very anti-consumer and the other way the risk their very right to defend IP.
